Game of Thrones is without doubt one of the most interesting shows of the decade. With millions of fans worldwide, the series based on the novels of George R.R. Martin inspired many people to create amazing art. One of them is digital artist Mike Wrobel, a really talented designer who decided to recreate the universe of Westeros in a unique and really creative way!
The artist started from a simple question: How would Game of Thrones look like if the action would be set in a contemporary period such as the 80s or 90s? What if the swords, bows, spears and armors would be replaced with NES guns, bats and tracksuits? So he started reimagining all the characters fighting for the throne in a gangsta, hip-hop era. And the result is amazing.
Jon Snow, portrayed by Kit Harington, is the bastard son of the late Lord Eddard Stark. Jon is a steward in the Night’s Watch. Now serving on the Wall, he found a place of acceptance where the circumstances of his birth are of little importance. Jon has a direwolf pet named Ghost. He wields the bastard sword, Longclaw, which was a gift from Lord Commander Jeor Mormont.
In the vision of Mike Wrobel, John Snow is a rebel kid, a punk ready to make trouble to anyone crossing him!
Tyrion Lannister, interpreted by Peter Dinklage is the youngest son of Lord Tywin Lannister.and one of the most adored characters of the series. With an intellect above average Tyrion manages to overcome the prejudice he faces as a dwarf and escape situations when all odds are against him.
In the vision of Mike Wrobel, Tyrion wears an unlikely shirt straight out of an episode of Parker Lewis.
Daenerys Targaryen, portrayed by the beautiful Emilia Clarke is the last surviving child of King Aerys II Targaryen. After a lifetime in exile she is sold into marriage by her brother to the Dothraki Khal Drogo. Betrayed by those she saved, Daenerys looses her husband and child.
And when all seemed lost, hope came from an unexpected direction, as she hatched three baby dragons from petrified dragon eggs. Now a beacon of hope, Daenerys embarks on a dangerous journey to reclaim her kingdom.
In the vision of Mike Wrobel, Daenerys is The Mother of Ferrets, a young, yet powerful woman inspiring confidence to everyone around her.
An imposing character, Khal Drogo, interpreted by Jason Momoa, is the leader of the Dothraki people. A powerful warlord and feared warrior, Drogo marries Daenerys Targaryen and subsequently grows to love her. He promises to retake the Seven Kingdoms for her after she survives an assassination attempt. He raids a Lhazareen village to take slaves to fund the planned invasion.
He took a small wound during the sack of the village and is treated by the godswife and maegi Mirri Maz Duur. His wound festers and he becomes gravely unwell. Daenerys asks Mirri Maz Duur to save him using blood magic but Mirri Maz Duur uses a spell that leaves him in a vegetative state in revenge for the destruction of her village. Daenerys ends his suffering herself and burns Duur alive on his funeral pyre.
In the vision of Mike Wrobel, Khal Drogo is a confident rock star traveling the world accompanied by his guitar.
Arya Stark, my personal favorite, is the younger daughter of Lord Eddard Stark. She is fiercely independent and is often mistaken for a boy. She wields a sword named Needle, a gift from her half-brother, Jon Snow, and she has been trained in the Braavos style of swordfighting. She adopted the direwolf, Nymeria, but they have since been separated.
When her father was betrayed and arrested, Arya managed to flee the castle and was found by Night’s Watch recruiter, Yoren, who got her out of the city disguised as a recruit and tried to take her home. However they were attacked along the way and Yoren was killed, leaving Arya caught behind the battle lines in the war-ravaged Riverlands, still trying to make her way back home.
Mike Wrobel’s version of Arya shows us a rebel kid with no respect for the law and those who try to make their point through force.
Sansa Stark, portrayed by cast member Sophie Turner, is the eldest daugter of Lord Eddard Stark. She adopted a direwolf she named Lady, but unfortunately it was executed following a dispute between Joffrey and Sansa’s sister, Arya. Sansa was once betrothed to King Joffrey Baratheon. She was initially thrilled at her betrothal, but has since experienced Joffrey’s cruelty and watched the execution of her father, Eddard Stark, on his orders.
Joffrey has since set aside his betrothal to Sansa in favor of Margaery Tyrell, but she remains a captive of House Lannister in King’s Landing. Sansa is now the lady wife of Lord Tyrion Lannister, following an arranged marriage by his father, Tywin.
Mike Wrobel’s version of Sansa Stark is a Beverly Hills role model student in love with the music of Backstreet Boys.
Ser Bronn, played by starring cast member Jerome Flynn is a skilled and dangerous sellsword working for Tyrion Lannister. He is rewarded with a knighthood for the vital role he performed during the Battle of the Blackwater, and takes the formal name Ser Bronn of the Blackwater. While he possesses no lands, wealth, or lordly title, this drastically elevates his social standing.
In the vision of Mike Wrobel, Ser Bronn is a relaxed gangster wearing the iconic Adidas tracksuit.
Joffrey Baratheon, portrayed by Jack Gleeson, is one of the most despised characters from the series. He is the current ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, having claimed the Iron Throne after his father, King Robert Baratheon, died. However Joffrey is actually the bastard son of the incestuous relationship between Ser Jaime Lannister and Queen Cersei Lannister. Because of this, his claim to the Iron Throne is challenged by Robert’s younger brother, Stannis Baratheon.
Joffrey was originally betrothed to Sansa Stark, whom he kept captive in King’s Landing after he beheaded her father for treason, as Eddard Stark tried to reveal the truth about his parentage. However, he later set Sansa aside in favor of Margaery Tyrell, as part of the new alliance between House Lannister, the primary supporters of Joffrey, and House Tyrell, the ruling house of the Reach whose support helped save King’s Landing from Stannis Baratheon’s attack.
Mike Wrobel’s version of Joffrey is a young boy, a punk who thinks he is a gangster by only caring a gun.
Cersei Lannister, portrayed by Lena Headey, is the widow of King Robert Baratheon and Queen Regent of the Seven Kingdoms. She has installed her son Joffrey Baratheon on the Iron Throne under the false claim that he is a legitimate son from her marriage but he is actually the product of her incestuous relationship with her brother Ser Jaime Lannister. While acting as the regent, she has troubles controlling King Joffrey’s erratic behavior.
In his new version of Game of Thrones, Mike Wrobel portrayed Cersei as an arrogant 80s glam rock star.
Jaime Lannister, portrayed by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is a knight of the Kingsguard and is in love with his twin sister, Queen Cersei Lannister, with whom he has been sexually involved for years. He and Lord Eddard Stark have had a caustic relationship ever since Jaime killed King Aerys, an act Eddard thinks dishonorable.
After the events that brought the Starks and the Lannisters to war, Jaime left his post to join his father, Lord Tywin Lannister, in his attack against the Riverlands. After King Robert Baratheon’s death and the dismissal of Lord Commander Barristan Selmy, Jaime was promoted in absentia to Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Jaime was laying siege to Riverrun when his son Joffrey assumed the Iron Throne. Jaime was captured by Robb Stark’s forces during the Battle of the Whispering Wood but was later released by Catelyn Stark in an attempt to make an unofficial exchange for Sansa and Arya Stark.
In the vision of Mike Wrobel, the portrait of Jamie Lannister resembles with the cops from Miami Vice.
Brienne of Tarth, portrayed by Gwendoline Christie, is a warrior of House Tarth, vassals to House Baratheon. After winning a tournament melee, she is made a member of King Renly Baratheon’s new Kingsguard, shortly before his assassination. She becomes the sworn sword of Catelyn Stark and vows to avenge Renly’s death. She is charged by Catelyn Stark to return Jaime Lannister to King’s Landing, in an attempt to exchange him for her two daughters she believes are held hostage there.
Mike Wrobel’s version of Brienne shows us a tough woman suited ina rugby armor..
Theon Greyjoy, portrayed by Alfie Allen, is the heir of Lord Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands. He has been a hostage of House Stark since his father’s failed uprising against King Robert Baratheon. Despite his status he became a close friend to Robb Stark. However, after Robb sent him as an emissary to his father during his war against the Iron Throne, Theon turned on the Starks and joined Lord Balon in his campaign to seize the North.
He took over Winterfell and installed himself as Prince of Winterfell until he was betrayed by his own crew and delivered to House Bolton shortly after. As a prisoner of Ramsay Snow, the “Bastard of Bolton”, he has been subjected to physical and psychological torture and mockingly renamed as “Reek”.
In his version, Mike Wrobel shows Theon holding a hot-dog, a subtle refference to the events presented in the third season of Game of Thrones TV show.
Margaery Tyrell, interpreted by Natalie Dormer, is the widow of King Renly Baratheon, a claimant to the Iron Throne in the War of the Five Kings. Her father Lord Mace Tyrell is the ruler of the Reach. She is betrothed to King Joffrey Baratheon after the Battle of Blackwater.
Mike Wrobel’s version of Margaery Tyrell shows us a young woman with a fake innocent look, in a very 90s floral dress.
Lord Tywin Lannister, portraied by Charles Dance, is the head of House Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock, Warden of the West, Lord Paramount of the Westerlands and, currently, the Hand of the King to his grandson, King Joffrey Baratheon. Intelligent, calculating, and ruthless, he is also the richest man in the Seven Kingdoms. His primary concern is his family’s legacy.
Mike Wrobel’s version of Tywin is a 4 stars general, calm, ruthless and a cold look.
